Surging bantamweight contender Merab Dvalishvili confirmed he’ll finally challenge Sean O’Malley for the divisional gold. The spot – Madison Square Garden Arena “Sphere,” LV. He means to face the undisputed titleholder later this year at UFC 306 in September, for Noche UFC 2. While there hasn’t been any confirmation from UFC’s top brass, the matter could gain much traction in the upcoming hours.

Merab Dvalishvili aspiring to face ‘Suga’ at the $2.3 billion marvel should come as no surprise. Very recently, keeping to his trend of calling out through skits, the Georgian spoofed a face-off with a Sean O’Malley-doppelganger. He even had Dave Schmulenson, a.k.a The Schmo (@theschmozone podcast) tag along for the dance-off in front of the Las Vegas venue.

Dvalishvili, the current #1 top contender, earned his spot after outpointing Olympian-bantamweight Henry Cejudo in their title-eliminator clash at UFC 298. Meanwhile, O’Malley (18-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC), notched his maiden defense just one numbered card after. He has been aspiring to face striking sensation Ilia Topuria or even Ryan Garcia in a crossover stint. But his love for the “Sphere” is also notable. He has, however, refuted the claims of any official news.

The clash between the 135-pound pair is the clear match to make; the stylistic one-shot wonder versus cardio monster. Even consensus top PPV draw-king Conor McGregor aspired to have them as his co-mains if he returned later on, rather than UFC 303. However, the question arises, should two non-Spanish combatants headline a PPV event clearly earmarked for Mexican Independence Day?

Merab Dvalishvili versus Sean O’Malley at the sphere: Reading between the lines

The “Sphere,” LV marks Madison Square Garden company’s biggest achievements to date. The LED-paneled globular arena is home to many global sporting events. Now, UFC CEO and head honcho Dana White has marked it for a thematic celebration of the Mexican Independence Day, with probable native staples from the roster fighting at the event.

However, that did not stop other fighters from wishing to headline the billion-dollar marvel. From Nate Diaz to old rival McGregor, to others. UFC 300’s big winner & ranked featherweight, Diego Lopes even pitched in after his 89-second TKO over Sodiq Yusuff .

Lately, Alicante-Georgian native Ilia Topuria told The MMA Hours’ Ariel Helwani (for MMAFighting on SBN) that the brass might want him to headline UFC 306. The matter had garnered much fan backlash.

Much like Topuria, Tbilisi native Merab Dvalishvili, from the Eastern Caucasus region of Europe is the closest Spanish neighbor to headline the card. However, it’s a far cry from actual Mexican fighters. Sean O’Malley too, commands a large base of social media-based neo-fandom but is far from resembling anything Mexican.

‘Suga’ has shown substantial interest in headlining UFC 306, saying he is waiting for the right pay-per-view to face Dvalishvili, rather than face him out of the country. With TUF: Season 32 kicking off later this month – Mexican undisputed flyweight champ, Alexa Grasso is expected to make an appearance. All in all, fans and pundits are still scouting the best option out.
