OK. Hope ya'll watched Barack Obama's acceptance speech Thursday night. If he didn't move you maybe the sound was turned down. When it was over I felt like I was ready to go out to Venice Beach and start registering people to vote right then at 9pm. We've got to show up on Nov. 4th to vote this man into the White House!!! FOR REAL! His ideas about recharging our education system by investing in early education and raising teacher's salaries were seriously inspiring. It's what I try to provide with my non-profit, TeamPlay, teaching kids leadership skills that show them the right way out of the cycle of poverty and violence. I wouldn't be where I am today without the teachers and mentors who showed me positive definition of success. And Barak is planning to do it across the whole country. INCREDIBLE (I know he said he's gonna raise the taxes on the top income bracket, Gil, but if he uses that money to improve our schools then you won't have to worry about some kids trying to sell pictures of your pool online cause they couldn't get a better job.) LOL But seriously, he made his case calm and cool and now it's up to us to listen and to act. He's not going to be able to do it on his own. We have to get out and vote on November 4th.   there is a common trend among politicians when it comes to elections....Rhetoric up the yeayo with stuff everyone wants to hear and then we as Americans tend to associate with whomsoever fits our own ideology the best....That being said, both candidates talk too much like candidates in the past and when it comes down to their time in Office, majority of the things theyve said either in town halls or in the debates arent done when their in Office..(hopefully this changes with Obama-->"The Man OF Change")..Its sad and its the truth that presidential candidates state lies to all of America and we all dumbly vote for that dude whomsoever it is...   Obama and McCain should be a no brainer win for Obama but then you have tons of people making millions of excuses on why Obama shouldnt be president....He doesnt have a good foreign policy (most logical), hes Muslim, Lack of Experience (McCains VP really has experience?), he doesnt wear a flag pin, he's black, etc. Might I add the flag pin excuse is one of the most inane excuses their is to date. What does a flagpin do? Like honestly when I put it on it bothers the hell out of me and it sure doesnt give me any super powers. I really dont get why people are so picky on something that has nothing do with leading a country thats gr8 like ours.....Do you see leaders like Mandela, Tony Blair, Putin, and Mugabe wear flag pins, lets be serious here....
  
  Im voting for who is more honest (though both are aunt jemina pancake flip floppers) and who really would be a better leader: Not the clown we had the past 8 years......With Hurricane Gustav coming, lets see if Bush learned from his blunder in Katrina..

    The flag lapel pin is a rhetorical device. The implication (and overt statement) is that since Obama does not wear a flag pin, he is not patriotic, and does not have a passion for the job that he seeks. I'm with you that it should not be an issue, but you know what? It's just like the typical "wedge issues," in that it's red meat for the base in the heartland; they eat this stuff up. Look at abortion and gay marriage; the status quo is not going to change, but strategists advise politicians to act like it will change in order to motivate people to vote. The business of government and the business of politics are two entirely different things.
    
    As for the other officials in other countries, they don't wear flag pins because overt patriotism reminds the public of violent nationalism. It's not part of the culture there because when it was part of the culture, bad things happened. The US has not been defeated in any war that it has not actually declared (which means WWII and previous; anything since then did not have a formal declaration of war), so overt patriotism is not something that has been damaging.

McCanin and his experience does not prove to me he is the best fit for Pres. it just proves that he is old and been in this game a long time. Nolan Ryan has alot of experoience pitching winning games, but i am going with the young rook, like a John Lackey who started game 7 for the Angels in the 04' WS who took the mound and was able to blow it by expeirnced vets like Bonds, Durham, and Snow and help the Angels win the first WS

  I think he will be one of the best US Presidents off all time. I`m from Poland and I think that man can do the things that G.Bush couldn`t do for many years. Relations between Poland and US will be better.

  The country goes through cycles every 8 years or so. We are in a down cycle now. We have had good times and bad with both parties entrenched as President. You have to remember who has controlled Congress the last few years. It is almost impossible to have an effective President who has a party affilliation that is opposite of the majority of Congress members. The war and illegal immigration have not helped the situation in this country. Crime is up, healthcare is skyrocketing, probably because of all the free services we have to give to people who don't even pay taxes in this country and that send all of their money elsewhere. Several reasons to ponder when it comes to the state of the economy in this country. Mortgatge crisis, porkbelly politics, etc.

    It's going to take more than Obama or McCain to get this country back to what it was. There are more issues than just who is President and who is going to be President. Our politicians , both Democrat and Republican have been selling this country out for years and it's not going to end until we are owned by foreign entities. Just better hope it's one besides Iran, China, or Russia.

  I like what he has to say. I think too many people throw the race card out there. Many people believe Obama was born in Africa which he wasn't. His father cheated on his mother while visiting Hawaii and Obama was born in Hawaii. He is as much white European descent as he is black African. I guess you would have to say that he is the first European African presidential candidate. His speeches reflect that. I don't see any prejudice in him. I think that's why politicians like Jesse Jackson don't like him. They can't accept the fact that he is half white and is going to treat all people the same. I hope he gets in. When you're half white and half black it's hard to be prejudice against the other color.

  I don't know who I'm voting for yet or if I can vote (im gonna find out after this) but we need a president who will improve the education system for teachers and students, who wants to lower taxes, and will do something about the war in in Iraq...So if Obama say he can and will do all these things then I hope becomes the president!

    Every politician that has ever run for anything in this country always promises better education and raises for teachers and it never happens. I don't expect it to this time either, no matter who is elected. They are too busy putting money into pet projects in their districts and pocketing the kickbacks instead of improving the lives of others through educational opportunities. The don't care beause they all have the money to send their kids to private schools.

      Paying teachers more is a waste of money and does nothing to improve the quality of public education.They are overpaid in the wealthiest school districts and yet they teach the same curriculum out of the same text books as the poorest districts.At least that's the case in Bucks County.Council Rock SD has an average salary of $80,000/year!! More than twice the average of Bensalem (this is a comparison of rich to poor in terms of quality of life in these two communities). Funny thing is, you can find an equal number of graduates from both high schools attending the same colleges. Teaching is a cop out profession (ask any below average intelligence teenage girl what she wants to do and the answer is elementary education about 95% of the time). The motivation behind starting a teaching career is generally portrayed as a job with a ridiculously powerful union that will garner high wages with low expectations and a tax payer-provided pension..oh and working about 180 days a year doesn't hurt either.

        No other job's salary is so connected to the local munincipality's real estate values. Eventually the only people who will be able to afford to live in many communities are the teachers. Also,how often do they use children as bargaining chips to ply more benefits and wages out of tax payers hands? Constantly. When they have their little bitch-fest strikes they tell you if you don't want them to be paid more you must not care about children's education.See, I think it's backwards. Move the high wage positions to urban areas where the task of getting kids through a grade level is most difficult.Let the teachers who want to stay in safe school districts re-hashing the same lesson plans year after year to over-priveledged brats do so at a minimum of compensation.Again, the problem with this idea is that the tax payers in most Philly neighborhoods would never be able to sustain the greed that these lazy, manipulative whiners carry with them throughout their tenure as "educators".

        The reason tax-payers provide the pension is that this great nation determined long ago that compulsory education is in the best interests of our democracy. Because taxation without representation runs contrary to both our constitutional and ideological predilections, we also decided to fund it at the state levels. I love posts that spit statistics that have no merit whatsoever.
        As for a cop-out profession, have you ever taught?
        Is intelligence the basis for whether a profession is valid? You do know that teaching requires a formal degree and in most cases a master's? Of course you do.
        Also, the best teachers in this great nation do not crack the textbooks; they invent and differentiate instruction based on the needs of the students. Textbooks are written and organized far too pragmatically to be effective.
        
        Also, teachers do not get paid for days they don't work. The contract is written so that their salary is based on days of work.
        Also, have you ever seen the educational requirements to maintain a teaching certificate? And the cost of a graduate credit?
        Also, my state doesn't have tenure so shut up. Painting all educators with the same broad strokes is ridiculous.

        What more do I need to show you to prove my point? Also, what kind of an argument are you making when you say teachers don't get paid for the days they have off?As you point out, their contracts are written so they accumulate their annual salary during the school year.It's also unclear what the exact requisites are to become a teacher in PA.I have friends who have done it with a BA and a certificate they earned in a single semester.Additionally, certain schools in Philly will hire you without a certificate because they can't hire enough teachers to cover all the basic classes.Every time I see a district go on strike I want to puke.

        There's no correlation between spending and education, because no one has really figured out how to effectively allocate money. Throwing money at the problem alone solves little, it's how you spend the money that counts. The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, for example, has spent a lot on education but I've read magazine articles where they themselves have said how they aren't yet getting the results they want.
        That said, I think our educational system does need an overhaul; there is no excuse for the most advanced nation on earth to be something like 22nd in education. But it will need more than just money, it will need a different way of thinking about education philosophically, and I have NO IDEA how that would go down. Hopefully whoever gets elected has a plan in that regard, and won't just throw money at it.

        I guess you're not an ignorant fool. I still can't believe they pay that much. Although, a third of their teachers have 20 years + experience which puts them at the top of the wage scale, and almost all have a Master's or better. (ZERO without degrees and certification)
        
        Still, that's about 20k more than my district pays and 76% of our students are below the poverty line.

JFranzen, I agree that the salary numbers are skewed due to tenure but I believe that's yet another problem with our educational system.Some of these teachers have grown stale and simply don't deserve their high wages. Oh, and I'll be expecting the deed to your house in the mail.

    Why can't you vote? As long as you are a US citizen and aged 18 by November 4, you can vote. Provided, of course, that you register by the deadline in your state and that your state doesn't have any other restrictions. ;-)
    
    Anyway, let's break you main points down. I commend you for mentioning three points, because anything over three-to-five salient points is information overload and the voters don't want to hear it. ;-) Well, here goes:
    
    "Improve the education system for teachers and students": And this is the duty of the national government how? It's not in the Constitution; historically, it has been the purview of state and local governments per the Tenth Amendment, and that's how it should remain.
    
    "Who wants to lower taxes": Well, Obama doesn't want to lower taxes. Besides, of these two that you just mentioned, you can't have both of them. If you have one, you can't have the other. Enhancing training and standards costs money, and how do you think the Feds are going to get it? It sure isn't through tariffs on imported goods anymore.
    
    "Will do something about the war in Iraq": Well, all the candidates will do something about the war in Iraq. The question is what they will do. ;-)

  I can understand why people are so excited about Barack, but some of the enthusiasm is over the top. His speech really wasn't that different from any other Democratic candidate in the past (Kerry, Gore, Clinton, etc.). The main difference is the *context*. People are so fed up with this administration and feel like they have been railroaded by the Republican party (and we were), that they are dying to hear someone speak of change.
  Obviously, Obama is a much better candidate than McCain, but Obama disappoints me for several reasons:
  1) He never speaks of the Palestinian-Israeli issue. He used to speak out against the Israelis actions, but now he keeps his mouth shut. He even wore a US-Israeli flag pin when speaking to AIPAC - http://blogs.citypages.com/blotter/2008/06/americas_leadin.php - He says that occupying Iraq will do nothing to stop terrorist groups that operate in over 80 countries, but one of the most important issues to them is the US's unconditional support of Israel.
  2) He turned his back on publicly financed elections. Apparently he only supports it when it benefits him to do so. This is an important step to start limiting influence of money on politics. The poor and disadvantaged obviously can't afford to donate, so they get marginalized.
  3) He voted for the FISA bill. I thought he was interested in protecting our civil rights.
  4) He says he wants to reform the bankruptcy bill, but then he chooses a running mate (Biden) who supported that very bill and whose biggest donor is MBNA. Oh, and guess who gave the most money to pay for the Democratic National Convention: Credit card companies. We need to tell them to stop selling our government to the highest bidder.
  5) His reversal on off-shore drilling. More evidence that he is indeed, somewhat of a flip-flopper. Is he a man of principle or a poll-watching panderer?
  6) He says he wants to *expand* the faith-based initiative. Why should religious organizations be in charge of distributing our tax dollars? To me, this is an attempt to appease Christian groups. Can we please separate religion from politics???
  We need 3rd parties to play a bigger role so that we can push the Democrats in the right direction. A good start would be to force them to offer us more choices by instituting "instant run-off ballots". That way we can vote for our first choice, but if they don't have the majority, we can have our 2nd choice. This eliminates the idea of a "spoiler" candidate.
  Please don't think that 3rd parties don't belong and will only "spoil" the election. Remember, the first party to push for freeing the slaves was a 3rd party - The Free Soil Party. Support 3rd party participation in the debates. Demand that Democrats and Republicans allow them to participate and even the playing field so that we can have a broader and more open debate on these issues. Refuse to allow them to tell us what we want. More voices! More choices!
  Allow Ralph Nader and Ron Paul to participate in the debates so we can challenge both Obama and McCain instead of allowing the 2 corporate parties to decide what to talk about.

    Erm, Ron Paul is not a candidate. He gave up long ago. The other prominent candidates are Nader (Ralph Nader Party :-D), Bob Barr (Libertarian), Chuck Baldwin (Constitution), and Cynthia McKinney (Green). Perhaps you would want to invite them. :-D

  there's one thing that everyone is not understanding. there's no such thing as a right or a wrong vote. as long as you use your vote to elect who YOU want, then the rest will sort itself out.
  what does it matter if he's african, african american, european african, etc? if you are voting for or against obama based on the color of his skin then maybe this country hasn't progressed as much as we thought...

  It would be sweet if There was a legitamate third party in America. I voted for Ralph Nadar *green party* in 2000 because In order for a 3rd party to be involved, they need a certain amount of votes. i believe its 5 percent. He only received 2.5 percent. I then voted for Kerry in 2004, Because I hate bush.
  
  However, Not because of race i simply can't vote for Obama. Its, mainly because of lack of experience. He has no Foreign Policy experience either! ..

    if their was a third party that would be dope but it depends on candidate....Ron Paul is really one of the best and most honest poltiicians....Jesse Ventura as well. That being said, Third parties fail because their are so many restrictions, lack of funds, media attention, not a majority of consensus, etc.....(this site has good info bout it (http://www.thirdworldtraveler.com/Political_Reform/Third_Parties_America.html) What is befuddling is usually the third party candidate is the most honest and make the country better...

  I can't vote, so I guess my opinion doesn't really matter. But, the Obama-hype has gotten out of control. It has become the "cool" thing to do. As much as we say race won't be an issue, it will. It will work both ways. Old white people will vote for McCain, and black people will vote for Obama. Barack seems like a great person, which is more than I can say for McCain. I disagree with McCain's views and Obama hasn't really shown any views. I think it was going to be close but McCain picking that woman with no experience as the VP will lose it for him. Obama's got this wrapped up.

    I can vote and I'm going to vote for Obama. My parents are in their sixties. My father is white and he's voting for Obama. My twenty three year old sister is white and she's voting for McCain because he is running with a woman. My mother is hispanic and she's also voting for McCain. I don't think old white people are necessarily going to vote for McCain.

  McCain reminds me of Scott Layden, he's all about quick patches and temporary solutions. Obama is much more of a long range thinker who will fix the problem from the ground up. It's a no-brainer. Obama has the ability to be one of the greatest presidents ever.

      Remarkably, I finally agree with you on something 5...Obama oppossed off shore drilling citing it would do nothing for 7-10 years. If that's the reason for his oppossition, then what does he have on the table to deliver IMMEDIATE relief??? Nothing. Just like the rest of his "yes-man" propoganda....all empty promises.

      Did you not watch the acceptance of the nomination speech? He actually talked about policy. And, there's this thing called the internets, you can actually go to his web site and research the candidate's positions.

      All you have to do is read over Obama's plan, which is posted publicly. He will make available for all citizens similar health plan enjoyed by Congress. Heath provider cannot turn anyone away because of pre-existing condition. This will be paid for by taxing the rich. McCain, on the other hand, wants to tax your health insurance that your employer provides to you. He wants to drive all of us away from employer-provided healthcare and into private industry, where we all buy our own insurance. Which means some of us who can't get health insurance because of pre-existing conditions are f*&ked. McCain will abolish state regulations, which will lead to less care at a higher cost.
      Obama will invest in alternative energy that costs half as much as nuclear energy and produces twice the efficiency; and at the same time, create over 10 millions new jobs and establishes USA as the leader in alternative fuel. McCain wants to 1) drill for oil, which even he admits won't start until 2018 at the earliest and 2) build nuclear power plants when even nuclear power engineers said alternative energy is the way to go because alternative fuel costs less and produces zero nuclear waste.
      Obama will cut taxes for everyone making under $250k a year. McCain still cut taxes but not as much as Obama for people making under $250k.
      Obama will stop the practice of borrowing money from China and spending it in Iraq. McCain wants to keep fighting this war until Jesus comes down from the heavens or until we're bankrupted, whichever comes first.
      On education, Obama has a new "Zero to Five" plan that aims at teaching pre-schoolers, especially those in impoverished household. He will create programs to help schools that are under-performing rather than punish them. And Obama doesn't believe the standardized test is the be-all-end-all. He allows schools to create their own curriculums rather than blindly following a policy. McCain, on the other hand, wants to keep the same Bush doctrine where standardized tests are the end of all argument. He wants to open up public schools and allow parents to choose where they send their children, but McCain have yet to explain how to handle all the parents wanting to send their kids to the nice schools and avoiding schools in the ghetto. Meaning, under McCain's policy, you may have to win a lottery for your kids to go to a good public school. If that's what you want, be my guest.

  PS- About the church Obama went to.....Understand that he's a politician and the only reason he left is because Rev. Wright was too stubborn to fall back when Obama needed him to shut up. But if you're bothered by Rev. Wright's sermons here's my advice: Listen to the ENTIRE sermon and not just clips spread out by the media to tarnish Obama's image. I actually heard Rev. Wright's full sermon live when he came to Philly right after 9/11. Everything he said he can back up with the Bible.

      Ok....I wasn't trying to talk religion, but if this man beleives something strongly and he can back up what he says with the written text that is the foundation of his beliefs, you can't knock him for that. What I'm saying is, everything dealing with Rev. Wright was nothing but propaganda to scare people away from Barack Obama. It never should've been brought up to begin with especially when only 5% or less of what was said was aired.

        Sadly, there is no way this election doesn't come down to white vs. black. If Obama does indeed share some or all of Wright's opinions on race and living in the US it wont be obvious until he wins and we see what policies he tries to institute.On the flip side, I highly doubt McCain has many brothers over to his house to watch the game on Sundays.IMO the people who want to talk about Wright's sermons as a reason to vote McCain are probably bigots and racists themselves.

  Oh! on the Tax chestnut: It is better to pay higher taxes on a strong dollar and an expanding economy than to pay higher taxes on a weak dollar and a stagnant economy. Under "W" the Dow Jones Industrial average has stayed in the 10,000 - 12,000 range. For all of the arms business and oil perks, the flat buck and the increased cost of everything robs you of whatever you think McCain will give you in a tax break.

  At this moment in time Obama is a better candidate for our country. Dont get me wrong McCain is a great candidate but i feel like this country needs america. We have to fix our relationship with our alley countries and really just our whole foreign policy. Also the Obama's education and long term economy plans are better then McCains in my opinion. Also i dont want to get caught up in the whole Obama Celerity thing but damn. This is wat our country needs, after soo many ppl in our country dont like the way bush did things we need Obama. He lifts many ppl up and is inspiring sometimes we just need someone like Obama.

George Bush was too stupid to conceal what REALLY motivates Washington DC and has confirmed my suspicions that this country is little more than an empirical tool for making rich white people richer.     you should really know what you're talking about before you spout bs like this. I am aware of all the arrests in pro sports, but you can't paint all of them with the same brush. BD does a lot for his community and i think he truly does as much good as his time and funds allow. As for the political aspect, YB is an avenue for athletes and sports fans to share their ideas. it's good to know that there is a lot more to these guys than just being freakish athletes on the court/field. people can make up their own minds. my question is why are you on here if you don't like hearing the athletes' perspectives? a lot of athletes shy away from showing who they truly are, so i applaud those who do actually have something to say. although, if i do see obama court side at a clips game this season, i will have to think twice about his motives haha.

Patriotism in this country is no more. No pride , no nothing. 9/11 is a blur in many of the people's minds.     He may have done coke, but McCain qualifies for the US Armed Services highest disability payment due to his extreme psychological condition incurred during his imprisonment. Does that mean he'll do a great job managing our country's machine of war?

      In his book "Dreams of my father" he RAILS against whites, while marvelling that his grandparents "seem' to be diffierent. It's a theme that runs throughout the book - your comments indicate you haven't read it.

      I have a black wife and we are VERY concerned about this issue.
      Do a just a smidgen of research- it'll make your argument THAT much

  First off, whether you're for McCain or Obama as an American you need to excercise your right to VOTE. If you chose not to, then you know what? You shouldn't be typing rhetoric on yardbarker.
  
  Now..... these are reasons why I'm for Obama. One, even though he is a politician he does seem like the most genuine candidate in recent history. He writes his own speeches which allows him to engage his audience unlike the current guy in audience who looks like he's reading "GO DOG GO" when he's speaking. Obama recognizes that getting elected is just the first step and he has long term PLAN. I also like the fact that while he wants to lead this country, he knows he can't change America alone and isn't afraid to challenge the citizens to do their part to make America a better place to live. The reasons people say he shouldn't be in office are more of excuses why not to try something new even though what's been tried in the past 8 years has this country in it's worst state since The Great Depression. I don't look for Obama for perfection which is what a lot of people against him have been doing in my opinion. I do think he's the best man to lead this country back on the right track though.....It's going to be a tough road and obviously he's not scared to take that step.

        PA is a non-referundum state.Voting for a third party is a waste of time.Third parties usually end up costing the election for the losing candidate because most people would have selected the runner-up if they didn't have the third party option (well,at least in elections where the DEM candidate loses because third party voters tend to never vote Rep) so they may actually cause more harm than good.

  I will not vote for anyone who wants to raise taxes..............punish small buiesness with more taxes( I thought that was part of the American dream....to be successful)..............and for life of me ...........he claims to have a plan to pay for every childs college education ( is the guy Moses ?? ). I do not plan to pay for every childs college education in this country( through more taxes) except for my own children. That burdon is pricey enough, thank you.

He will raise taxes for people who bring in more than 5 million a year, if you're bringing in more than that, you're not a small business.         Actually, that's their socialized health care. From what I've read, the plans for the USA do not nationalize, rather they regulate. Considering the importance of health of citizens to the health of the workforce and therefore the nation, something has to be considered that improves upon what we have now.

And I am pretty sure the people in charge of the presidential campaign have checked to see if he was born an eligible citizen, so you are probably right in that final thought. And I'm also certain that taking from those who "succede" is no worse than taking from everyone else. Plus, we aren't actually in a recession.

    Dude, you've seriously got to put down "The Obama Nation"; it's truth-stretching incompetence and half truths aren't anything to be repeating publicly unless you're trying to demonstrate your own inability to to proper research. Or at least look at both sides of the issue and make your own judgments instead of parroting the fake scholarship of the Swift Boat crowd. The simple truth is that unless you are a millionaire already you will not be helped in any meaningful way by a McCain presidency. It's the same reason we can see an unfamiliar object and quickly classify it based on its dominant characteristics. Experiences add up and make more complex our collection of reference points. This is a wiring issue. Racism is a behaviour issue and is a manifestation of the mishandling of information regarding a limited sample of people sharing common traits.

  Now it takes a little bit of time , but look at what he has voted for and aginst, and also look at how many times he didn't vote at all. But here are a couple things that stood out to me..................
  
  * He voted AGAINST a bill that would fund Border Security, immigration enforcement and criminal alien removal programs.
  
  * He voted AGAINST a bill that would pay down the Federal Debt and eliminate government waste spending by reducing spending 5% on programs rated as in affective .
  
  * he voted AGAINST a bill for Social Security Reform
  
  * he voted AGAINST a bill to protect the family budget from runaway Government spending
  
  * He voted AGAINST a bill protecting small bueiness, family ranches and farms from the death tax............
  
  **** Voted for setting forth the Congressional Budget for 2009.............and appropriative budgetary levels for fiscal yrs 2010-2013..................( I thought he had issues with the current budget)
  
  Everything I have spoke of came directly off the Senate web site. But I doubt the majority of people will take a few minutes to look at it. The only CHANGE Obama has for us is Bigger government, more wasteful spending. Which is what is going on now..................that is why Congress has a 19% approval rating. Go figure.

The media is playing her as little miss wholesome woman, but everytime I look at here I think she's gonna start Gangsta Crap. I don't like her nor trust her and to have a first lady like that would be worse then either candidate as president.

  Hey Baron. Assuming that Obama's plan was enacted while you were in school and it was even a moderate success, Would you have gone to public school instead of the high-priced Crossroads private school? Maybe yes, but I don't think you would have because the main problem is not education. The main problem with the public schools system in the inner city is the gangs. Politicians can keep throwing money at the public educational system, but nothing has been solved or will be solved by doing that because there are much larger societal issues at play.
